I went down to catch Caiti Baker and Tasman Keith tear down The Lansdowne Hotel this past Saturday the 20th of Jan. Got the call up from my bro Tasman Keith who invited me to come join in the festivities. And after a long day at work - I was massively looking forward to hear some rap songs!
I took along my camera and my nifty 50mm and came away with some bangers!
It was so cool to see some independent music in a small intimate venue like The Lansdowne for the first time in a long time! It reminded me of Hip Hop gigs at the Hyde Park Hotel, The Rosemount, Heat Night Club, The Rocket Bar and the joint that used to be upstairs at the Leederville Hotel back in Perth circa 04/05 in Perth. I saw Kid Confucius, DownSyde, Muph and Plutonic, LifeKwest, Drapht, Hunter, and all those other acts that were based in the west or came thru the West and gave me my initial Hip Hop Education.
The whole vibe also reminded me of the shows I saw when I graduated to Melbourne and saw Phrase, Def Wish Cast, Briggs and Reason, The Funkoars, Tall Man Sound System, Nine High, Mantra, One Sixth and The Melodics at places like F4, The Laundry, The Corner, Horse Bazaar, The Workmen's Club, The Gershwin Room and all those other amazing little venues that I only remember from touch and smell.
Suffice to say it was massive nostalgia with the added excitement of brand new people making brand new music. Shout out to Imbi the Girl (@imbithegirl) and The Bad Bitch Orchestra (badbitchchoir) for putting down some amazing sounds! Huge, amazing, inspiring, strong independent music by incredible women. Unfortunately I didnt capture much of these first two sets - my bad - next time for sure because they were incredible!!
My dude Tasman Keith (@tasmankeith) jumped up and caused a goddamn BLACKOUT along side his brother Kapital J (kapital.j) with DJ Helix (@action_johnsonn) on the wheels of steel. Im massively excited about what Tasman is working on right now. I honestly feel that between him and Nooky (@nookymusic ) (aka: The Nowra Rattlesnake aka: Nooky 3:16) we are going to be treated with some of the most inspiring, confronting and hard hitting hip hop we've seen in a LONG time - at least since A.B Original's Reclaim Australia! Check out the video to Tasman Keith's track Might Snap right here!
Finally - the irrepressible and totally charismatic Caiti Baker (@caitibakermusic) blew us all away with her incredible stories, vocals and shimmying dance moves. Since her set I've started soaking into her album Zinc and its amazing. Check out her new video for her song Rough Old Town Here.
